Second Egypt Train Crash Injures Many, Carriages Fall in Canal

A second train crash in recent weeks left many injured in Egypt early on Sunday, October 13. According to local media, a locomotive collided with the rear of a sleeper train travelling from Aswan to Cairo, causing two carriages to plunge into the Ibrahimiya Canal in Upper Egypt.

Footage showed the two carriages partially submerged in the canal. The railway authority confirmed the crash occurred in Minya province, south of Cairo, and stated that an investigation into the cause is ongoing.

The Health Ministry reported that at least 20 people were injured and have been hospitalised. The unaffected carriages resumed their journey towards Cairo.

In recent years, authorities have announced plans to improve Egypt’s railways. In 2018, the president estimated that 250 billion Egyptian pounds (around $8.13 billion) would be required to fully modernise the country’s outdated rail system.
