In a major development underscoring the gains in Nigeria’s ongoing security efforts, the Niger State Government has taken custody of 17 kidnap victims who were successfully rescued in Kaduna State. The operation was carried out through the joint efforts of the Nigeria Police Force and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
The victims, abducted on 3 March 2025 from Kango and Wuloto villages in Munya Local Government Area, were formally handed over at a ceremony held at the Police Command Headquarters in Minna.
During the event, the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Yakubu Garba, lauded the determination and cooperation among security agencies that led to the safe recovery of the abductees. He noted that although Munya and Shiroro Local Government Areas have historically grappled with frequent incidents of kidnapping and banditry, a marked decline has been observed over the past two years, owing to intensified security interventions.
“Our administration remains committed to the security and welfare of every citizen. The reduction in criminal activities, especially in vulnerable areas like Munya and Shiroro, is the result of strategic collaboration with security agencies,” the Deputy Governor stated.
He further pledged that the rescued individuals would receive comprehensive medical treatment and psychosocial care to aid their recovery and reintegration into society.

Commissioner of Police, Adamu Elleman, who performed the official handover, highlighted the success of “non-kinetic” approaches to security. He stressed the vital role played by intelligence sharing and collaboration across agencies.
“This rescue is a product of effective synergy between the police and the Office of the National Security Adviser. It demonstrates our collective commitment to ending the menace of kidnapping and restoring peace to our communities,” Elleman said.
Of particular note is that 15 of the 17 rescued individuals belong to the same extended family — a fact that added a deeply emotional layer to the operation. Their loved ones, present at the ceremony, were visibly moved and expressed immense gratitude to those who made the rescue possible.
The occasion drew top government officials, security operatives, and families of the victims, many of whom had endured weeks of fear and uncertainty.
This successful rescue has been hailed as a strong blow against the forces of insecurity in Niger State, bolstering public trust in the capacity of Nigeria’s security apparatus to safeguard its citizens.
