Six migrants were tragically shot dead by Mexican soldiers in the southern region of the country, the Mexican defence ministry announced on Wednesday. The incident occurred during a military pursuit of suspicious vehicles on a highway, which ended in the deaths of the migrants.
The patrol involved discovered 33 migrants from various countries, including Egypt, Nepal, Cuba, India, and Pakistan, travelling in one of the vehicles. In response, the ministry stated that two soldiers who fired the shots have since been relieved of their duties pending an investigation.
The full circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation as authorities work to determine how and why the tragedy unfolded. Mexican authorities have faced increasing pressure to manage migration flows through the country, but the incident raises further concerns about the use of military force in such operations.
