Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati has been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for viral meningitis, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) confirmed on Sunday.
The 26-year-old, a two-time Ballon d’Or winner, missed Spain’s 2–0 victory over Japan on Friday—the reigning world champions’ final warm-up fixture ahead of the Women’s Euro 2025, which kicks off next week.
According to the RFEF, Bonmati is expected to rejoin the national squad “in the coming days,” though she is not expected to feature in the team’s early group stage fixtures.

“Thanks for all the messages and to those who have helped me these past few days,” Bonmati wrote in a post on social media. “Fortunately, everything is OK. I hope to be back soon.”
Spain begin their Euro 2025 campaign next Thursday with a Group B clash against Portugal in Bern. They will also face Belgium and Italy during the group stage.
Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. The viral form, while unpleasant, is generally less severe than the bacterial strain, which can prove fatal within 24 hours if untreated.
