Sporting Lisbon have parted ways with head coach Joao Pereira, just over a month after he succeeded Ruben Amorim, with Rui Borges named as his replacement on Thursday.
Pereira took the reins at the Portuguese club following Amorim’s move to Manchester United but was dismissed after a series of disappointing results.
Sporting, who had won every league match before Pereira’s appointment, lost top spot in the Primeira Liga to Benfica following a goalless draw with Gil Vicente last weekend. Pereira’s tenure was marred by a poor start, with losses in his first four matches in both the Primeira Liga and Champions League.
Rui Borges, previously in charge of Vitoria Guimaraes, steps into the role. Borges led Guimaraes to a strong second-place finish in the league phase of the UEFA Conference League and secured a sixth-place finish in the Primeira Liga
