Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has announced the passing of his father, sharing the heart-breaking news with fans and followers on social media.
The Chippa United shot-stopper wrote, “R.I.P Dad,” on Instagram, accompanied by a tearful emoji and a burning candle.
He later added another message, “Rest in heaven,” with a broken heart emoji, reflecting his deep sorrow. Nwabali did not provide further details about his father’s death.
Support poured in immediately from fans, teammates, and well-wishers, who sent messages of sympathy and encouragement to the grieving player.
The sad news coincides with a notable achievement for Nwabali and the Super Eagles, as the team recently secured their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
In their latest qualifier, Nigeria held Benin to a 1-1 draw, with Victor Osimhen’s late equaliser sealing their qualification.
However, the joyous moment was overshadowed by Nwabali’s personal loss. The goalkeeper is expected to sit out Nigeria’s upcoming match against Rwanda as he takes time to grieve.
The Super Eagles, who were runners-up in the 2023 AFCON, now turn their attention to the 2025 tournament, hoping to claim the title.
Meanwhile, questions remain about whether caretaker coach Augustine Eguavoen will lead the team into the competition.
