The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has flagged off a significant transmission line upgrade in Kano, a move aimed at enhancing electricity reliability across Northern Nigeria’s industrial and residential zones.
In a statement released on Sunday by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Mrs. Ndidi Mbah, the project involves the overhaul of the ageing Kumbotso-Dakata 132 kV double-circuit transmission line, a long-standing constraint in power supply to critical areas such as the Dakata Industrial Zone, and the forthcoming Walalambe Transmission Substation.
The upgrade, which is scheduled for completion within 12 months, includes the replacement of outdated ACSR dog conductors with modern, high-capacity ACCC-Silvassa conductors.
Additionally, the project features the installation of Optical Ground Wire (OPGW) to enable advanced communication and monitoring capabilities, as well as the deployment of composite polymer insulators designed to withstand the region’s challenging environmental conditions.

The initiative, according to the statement, is a strategic effort to restore confidence in the power transmission system and foster industrial growth.
Mrs. Mbah cited the General Manager of Transmission Services, Mr. Ali Sharifai, who emphasised the broader significance of the upgrade, describing it as a step beyond mere infrastructure renewal—one that would support both industry and local communities through a more dependable electricity supply.
The Kano transmission line upgrade forms part of TCN’s broader infrastructure enhancement strategy. This includes similar projects such as the ongoing reconductoring of the Kankia-Katsina 132 kV line, which is expected to be completed within five to six weeks, and the upgrade of lines in Port Harcourt to boost transmission capacity and minimise outages.
Since 2020, TCN has successfully executed 22 transmission projects and system enhancements. These include the construction of four new 132 kV transmission substations and the upgrade of 15 existing ones with higher-capacity transformers and advanced equipment.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s economic and social development by investing in durable and efficient transmission infrastructure that meets the growing energy demands of the nation.
