Gen. Ibrahim Jabir Ibrahim, a member of the ruling Sovereign Council in Sudan, has announced that the military will establish a technocratic government to oversee the country’s affairs until elections are conducted.
Speaking to military officers and officials in Gedaref on Monday, Gen. Ibrahim stated that Sudan would undergo a non-political transitional period, as reported by the state-owned Sudan News Agency (Suna).
He outlined that the technocratic government’s role would be to administer Sudanese affairs and pave the way for democratic elections. Gen. Ibrahim emphasised that the armed forces would not engage in any agreements with politicians.
These statements follow recent remarks by another Sovereign Council member, Lt. Gen. Yasir al-Atta, who asserted that the military would not relinquish power to civilian groups until after elections.
Gen. Atta also encouraged pro-army activist groups to establish a governing body for the country, a move that could sideline the former civilian coalition, the Forces of Freedom and Change (FFC), which shared power with the army before the October 2021 coup.
The army has accused the FFC of supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, although the group denies these allegations.
