A Tunisian National Guard officer was stabbed on Thursday by the brother of a suspected terrorist during an arrest operation in Monastir governorate, a judicial source reveals.
The incident occurred as a National Guard unit attempted to detain the suspect, accused of belonging to a terrorist group, at his residence. During the operation, his brother attacked the officer, stabbing him in the abdomen.
The injured officer underwent surgery and is reportedly recovering in hospital.
Both brothers have been taken into police custody, and an investigation has been launched by the judicial division combating terrorism. The suspects’ identities have not been disclosed, and the Tunisian interior ministry has yet to comment on the incident.
Tunisia has faced a persistent insurgent threat since the 2011 revolution that ended Zine El Abidine Ben Ali’s dictatorship. While authorities claim progress in combating extremism, the country has seen devastating attacks in recent years, including those in Sousse and Tunis in 2015, which claimed dozens of lives.
