The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) headquarters in Washington, D.C. was unexpectedly closed on Monday, February 3, 2025, with employees receiving an email shortly after midnight instructing them not to report to the office.
Essential on-site and maintenance personnel were informed separately.
This development comes following increasing scrutiny of the agency, which has been a focal point in President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s broader efforts to reform the federal government.

Trump and his allies have long criticised USAID, claiming it is partisan and favours the Democratic Party.
Speaking on X Spaces early Monday, Musk stated that Trump had confirmed his intention to “shut down USAID” following days of speculation, a funding freeze, and numerous staff suspensions.
Before this, Trump had told reporters: “It’s been run by a bunch of radical lunatics, and we’re getting them out, and then we’ll make a decision” on the agency’s future.
