The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has attributed Nigeria’s failure to meet the 6,000MW electricity generation target by December 2024 to rampant vandalism of critical power infrastructure.
Adelabu explained that while the government had implemented measures to achieve this milestone, repeated vandalism of electricity towers derailed progress.
Special Adviser Bolaji Tunji disclosed this during an interview, revealing that power generation currently fluctuates between 4,000MW and 4,900MW, serving a population of around 200 million.
“By November 27, we reached 5,231MW,” Tunji noted. “Unfortunately, vandalism set us back, but efforts to boost supply are ongoing.”
The Transmission Company of Nigeria reported spending N8.8bn to repair 128 vandalised towers nationwide in 2024.
Looking ahead, the government plans to increase budgetary provisions, ensure timely subsidy payments, and attract private sector investment to revitalise the power sector in 2025.
