Marketa Vondrousova ended the impressive run of Chinese qualifier Wang Xinyu to secure the Berlin WTA championship on Sunday, sparking hopes for a second Wimbledon title.

The Czech player, who claimed the Wimbledon trophy in 2023, faced a tough challenge from Wang, who was making her debut in a final, but ultimately prevailed 7-6 (12/10), 4-6, 6-2.

This victory marked Vondrousova’s third title on the WTA circuit and indicated that she is gaining momentum at an opportune time, especially after struggling with injuries, as Wimbledon approaches next week.

Vondroušová, 25, reached the finals at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 but has seen her world ranking plummet from sixth to 164 due to months of absence from the sport caused by a left shoulder injury, for which she underwent surgery last year.

This was her first appearance in a title match since she overcame Ons Jabeur in straight sets at Wimbledon two years ago.

The reward of this win will be reflected on Monday when she climbs into the top 100, rising to 73 in the latest WTA rankings.
