The Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has revealed that over 300,000 Boko Haram members and their families have so far surrendered and embraced peace as part of the state’s deradicalisation and reintegration efforts.
Speaking during an interview with News Central, Zulum described the mass surrender as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, attributing the success to a combination of military operations and soft approaches.
“Since last 3 to 4 years to date, we received nothing fewer than 300,000 repentant Boko Haram members and their families. That is a very huge success. So, this alongside with the kinetic measures have drastically reduced the insurgency,” the governor stated.
He further emphasised that non-kinetic approaches—which include dialogue, rehabilitation, and reintegration—have complemented the military’s operations effectively.
“But I want to inform you that our non-kinetic measures have yielded a very positive result because we received tremendous support from the Nigerian Army.”

Zulum praised the improved synergy between the Borno State Government and the Nigerian military, noting that the long-standing coordination gaps have significantly diminished.
“Honestly speaking, Borno State Government is working well with the Nigerian Army. We used to have some certain problems that it has been a long time that we are maintaining a very cordial relationship. And because of this, a lot has been achieved.”
The Borno Governor, widely known for his proactive stance on security and development, has been central to efforts to stabilise the state after more than a decade of devastation by Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.
The governor’s remarks come amid growing calls for sustained support for peacebuilding, reconstruction, and humanitarian efforts in the Northeast.
