The All England Club is preparing to pay tribute to two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray by erecting a statue in his honour.

Murray famously ended Britain’s 77-year wait for a men’s singles champion when he won the title in 2013, later repeating his triumph in 2016. He retired from professional tennis following the Paris Olympics last year.

Organisers at Wimbledon hope to unveil the statue in 2027 as part of the championship’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

“We are looking to have a statue of Andy Murray here at Wimbledon and we’re working closely with him and his team,” said All England Club chair Debbie Jevans, speaking to the ainslie + ainslie Performance People podcast. “The ambition is that we would unveil that at the 150th anniversary of our first Championship, which was 1877. He’s got to rightly be very involved in that and him and his team will be.”

The new statue would join that of Fred Perry, who was previously Britain’s last men’s singles champion before Murray’s historic 2013 win. A bronze statue of Perry was unveiled at Wimbledon in 1984 to mark the 50th anniversary of his first singles victory.

Tennis legends including John McEnroe and Billie Jean King have previously called for Murray to be honoured with a permanent tribute at Wimbledon.
