Ukraine has imposed sanctions on three Chinese companies following President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s accusation that China has been supplying weapons to Russia.

China’s Foreign Ministry dismissed the allegation as “groundless” on Friday. Despite maintaining strong economic ties with Moscow throughout the three-year conflict, Beijing continues to claim neutrality and denies any involvement in the war.

The Ukrainian government released an updated list of sanctioned entities on Friday, including Russian and Chinese companies. Among the newly blacklisted Chinese firms are Beijing Aviation and Aerospace Xianghui Technology Co. Ltd, Rui Jin Machinery Co. Ltd, and Zhongfu Shenying Carbon Fiber Xining Co. Ltd.

The sanctions prohibit the companies from conducting business in Ukraine and freeze their assets within the country. However, the government did not specify the reasons these firms were added to the list.

In 2021, Ukraine exported approximately $8 billion worth of goods to China, primarily raw materials and agricultural products. According to official data, imports from China stood at just under $11 billion, largely consisting of manufactured goods.

Speaking to reporters in Kyiv on Thursday, Zelenskiy claimed his government had evidence that Chinese firms were supplying artillery and gunpowder to Russia and manufacturing certain weapons on Russian soil. He did not present evidence to support these claims.

Earlier this month, Zelenskiy also alleged that Chinese nationals were fighting alongside Russian forces, including two who had reportedly been captured.

Ukraine summoned a Chinese diplomat for clarification. Later, both Ukrainian and U.S. officials stated that the individuals had volunteered independently, motivated by financial gain.
