Alexander Zverev is gearing up for his 2025 season with the goal of becoming the world number one, but the German tennis star emphasised that staying fit and healthy is equally vital to his pursuit. Currently ranked number two, Zverev will kick off his campaign on Sunday, as defending champions Germany face Brazil in a group match at the United Cup, ahead of the Australian Open next month.
Zverev trails Italian Jannik Sinner, the current world number one, by over 3,000 ranking points. However, the 27-year-old’s confidence is high following his recent success, winning both the Rome and Paris Masters 1000 titles.
Despite these victories, Zverev remains hungry for more, acknowledging that while the results were satisfying, he still has goals and dreams to achieve. Reflecting on his career after a career-threatening ankle ligament tear during the 2022 French Open semi-finals, Zverev shared his gratitude for being able to compete at the highest level once again.
“I was one match away from world number one before the injury,” Zverev recalled. “But now, I’m back competing for big events and top spots in the sport. I wasn’t sure I’d ever return to this level after that injury.”
Zverev’s resilience was evident when he reached the French Open final last June, and he’s determined to build on that success, with a particular focus on improving his previous semi-final finishes at the Australian Open in 2020 and 2023.
“I’ve come close to a Grand Slam title multiple times. But staying healthy and fit is my main priority moving forward,” he added.
