Rwanda confirm bid to host 2021 Senior Afrobasket Tournament

President of Rwanda Basketball Federation, Desire Mugwiza has confirmed they have applied to host the 2021 Afrobasket Men’s Senior teams Championship.

“We have sent our request to the International Basketball Federation, we want to host Afrobasket Men’s senior team’s tournament because we have all the requirements. We have the stadiums and hotels,” Mugwiza said.

Rwanda’s bid might be aided by the ongoing construction of the 10,000 seat capacity Kigali Sports Arena, outside Amahoro National Stadium in Remera, which according to reports is to be completed in August before the facility hosts its first game later in the year.

Senegal and Mali are the other countries who have made bids to host the competition.

The Afrobasket takes place every four years, with FIBA Africa now launching the AfroCan, a national team competition to take place every two years and will feature only local players. Mali was confirmed as hosts of the first edition of FIBA AfroCan.

Madagascar, Nigeria and Tunisia are countries who have applied to host the 2019 FIBA Africa Women’s Champions Cup, with a decision to be made later in the year.
