1. Sundowns and TP Mazembe seek to overturn first leg deficits in CAF Champions League semifinals
CAF Champions League second leg semi final matches will take place this weekend. In Pretoria, Mamelodi Sundowns will attempt to overturn a 2-1 loss in the first leg against Wydad Casablanca while TP Mazembe entertain Esperance in Lubumbashi after losing the first leg 1-0 in Races.
In the CAF Confederations Cup, Etoile du Sahel take on Zamalek who won the first leg 1-0 while CS Sfaxien will be looking to protect their 2-0 first leg win when they visit RSB Berkane.
2. Baseball Africa Cup ends in South Africa
The final of the Baseball Africa Cup will take place at Boksburg City Stadium in Johannesburg. The winner will be given a place at the WBSC Baseball Europe-Africa qualifying event for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, taking place in Italy from September 18 to 22.
3. Semenya pushes CAS verdict aside to lead African charge at Diamond League meet
All eyes will be on South Africa’s Caster Semenya as the IAAF Diamond League begins in Doha at the newly renovated 48,000 capacity Khalifa International Stadium. Semenya, who has been hinting at possible retirement, following the recent CAS ruling, will lead a strong African presence at the meet including
Nigel Amos, Tobi Amusan, Blessing Okagbare and Emmanuel Korir among others.
4. Kenyans and Ethiopians get set for Skopje Marathon
All eyes will naturally be on the East African contingent when the 2019 Wizz Air Skopje Marathon begins. Eunice Muchiri and Wilfred Korir lead the Kenyan challenge while Ethiopia’s Chalachew Tiruneh and Getaye Gelaw will also be in action.
5. Diame, Atsu out to dent Liverpool’s title charge at St. James’ Park
Newcastle duo Mohammed Diame of Senegal and Ghana’s Christian Atsu should be in action when Newcastle United entertain title chasing Liverpool at St. James’ Park. The Reds will be without Guinean midfielder Naby Keita who suffered a groin injury in the UEFA Champions League loss to Barcelona which could see him miss the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations which kicks off in Egypt on 21 June.
