Revelations have come to the fore regarding the recent shock sacking of former Confederation of African Football general secretary Amr Fahmy.
CAF abruptly fired Fahmy after the Egyptian accused the organization’s president Ahmad Ahmad of bribery, misappropriation of hundreds of thousands of dollars and sexual harrassment.
An internal document sent on March 31 by Fahmy to a FIFA body that investigates alleged ethics breaches, accused Ahmad of ordering his secretary-general to pay $20,000 bribes into accounts of African soccer association presidents. The report also contained details of alleged sexual harassment of female staff members by the African body’s president.
Fahmy also accused Ahmad of using the organization’s funds to send a number of African federations presidents on pilgrimage in clear breach of laid down rules and ethics.
Fahmy was fired during an executive committee meeting in Cairo on Thursday, hours to the draw for the Africa Cup of Nations finals. CAF has since apointed Moroccan Hajji Mouad as its new General Secretary.
The latest saga comes on the back of a troubled build-up for hosts Egypt, as they enter the final stretch of preparations for the 24-team Africa Cup of Nations to take place in June.
