100 People Killed in Western Ethiopia Attack

At least one hundred people have been killed in an attack in the Western Ethiopian region of Benishangul-Gumuz.

This was revealed on Wednesday by the human rights commission of Ethiopia.

The commission said gunmen attacked homes in Bekoji village of the region and set houses on fire while people were sleeping.

Bulen is known for regular ethnic tensions since Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took over in 2018

In the Southern region of the country, there is a battle against insurgency, while it has hardly recovered from the bloodshed from the conflict in the northern region of the country, Tigray.

Thousands of people were killed during the conflict while almost one million Ethiopians were displaced.

The latest attack in Bulen underscores Ethiopia’s security challenges ahead of the 2021 General elections. Tensions and endless violent tussle have been some of the new struggles of the Ethiopian people.

“In previous attacks it was people who came from ‘the forest’ who were involved but, in this case, victims said they knew the people involved in the attack,” the rights commission said in its statement.

The Gumuz people, the most affected in the region has been in ethnic battles with other tribes, leading to scores of dead bodies.
