At least 11 Ethiopian nationals travelling to Yemen through the Bosaso port city have died in a road accident, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).
They were being transported by smugglers who reportedly planned to take them to Yemen via the port city of Bosaso, the IOM adds.
According to the IOM, six of the victims were women while five were men being transported by smugglers. However, their lorry overturned on Tuesday, a short distance from Bosaso. The IOM has only just released the details.
Local authorities say they believe the lorry overturned due to a mechanical issue and that no other vehicle was involved.
The municipality representative Mohamed Jama confirm at least 20 passengers were injured, and that 11 bodies have been retrieved and buried.
“We have buried the bodies and injured ones are being treated at Bosaso General Hospital,” Jama said.
