A night accident on Saturday, involving an overloaded matatu has led to the death of 11 persons at Kanyonyoo junction in Kitui County, 180 kilometres east of Nairobi.
The unfortunate occurrence happened when the matatu conveying travellers, lost control and rolled over several times.
Kitui County Police Commander, Leah Kithei confirmed the incident, adding that the the 14-seater Public Service Vehicle (PSV) had lost control while returning from a traditional marriage ceremony in Mwingi.
Reports indicate that the matatu was overloaded with twice the regular number of passengers.
Road accidents continue to claim many lives with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) carrying out aggressive sensitization campaigns urging road users to adhere to traffic laws to avert further loss of lives and injury.
