12 Killed, 33 Injured in Bus Accident in Egypt

At least 12 people were killed and 33 injured in Egypt on Monday when a bus overturned on a highway linking Cairo to the Red Sea coast, according to the Egyptian health ministry.

In a statement, the ministry said that 28 ambulances were dispatched to the scene of the accident on the Al-Galala highway, which connects Cairo to Red Sea coastal towns, including Ain Sokhna.

Local media, including the state-owned Al-Ahram newspaper, reported that the victims included students from Galala University, located in Galala City, one of the government’s national projects in the Suez governorate.

The privately owned pro-state news channel Sada al-Balad reported that preliminary investigations indicated the bus driver was speeding, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

According to a report by the statistics agency CAPMAS released in 2022, road accidents in Egypt claimed 7,101 lives in 2021, a 15.2% increase from 2020.
