Fourteen people have gone missing following a boat overturning on a lake in Southern Ethiopia, local authorities said on Friday.

According to the communications office for the Gamo zone, the boat, which was loaded with bananas, sank on Thursday in Lake Chamo, located south of Addis Ababa.

Rescuers found two survivors who managed to stay afloat by holding onto jerrycans. Officials say a search for other passengers is ongoing.

According to local police commander, Reta Tekla, fifteen workers responsible for unloading the bananas and an operator where aboard the vessel. The reason why the boat sank remains unknown.

Lake Chamo in the Great Rift Valley, with a maximum depth of 14 meters, is inhabited by crocodiles and hippopotamuses.
