A Cholera outbreak in the South-East of the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed 14 soldiers and affected around 500 others in the Haut-Katanga Province.

This was confirmed by the commander of the 22nd military region, Gen Eddy Kapend, in the Mura military centre.

Kapend made the confirmation of the deaths on Tuesday during a meeting with a UN Children Fund (UNICEF) delegation at the DR Congo city of Lubumbashi.

“As of 72 hours ago, the number of patients receiving treatment had risen to exactly 144. We have recorded 14 deaths and have saved many patients who have returned to their ranks,” Gen Kapend said.

According to the General, unsanitary conditions at the military camp were responsible for the Cholera outbreak.

A similar outbreak in the neighboring province of Tanganyika killed at least 10 people in July 2023.
