14 Travellers Missing as Tanzanian Plane Crashes in Comoros

Reports indicate that rescuers are looking for 14 passengers and crew on the Cessna Caravan plane, a Tanzania-registered small aircraft that crashed over the weekend in the Indian Ocean atoll of Comoros.

Those aboard the missing plane include 12 Comoran passengers and two Tanzanian pilots.

The Cessna Caravan plane, which was on a short-term lease to a Comoran operator, plunged into the sea on Saturday as it flew between the capital Moroni and the city of Fomboni.

According to Mohammed Mazrui, managing director of Fly Zanzibar, searchers and rescuers noticed what seemed to be floating debris in the water about lunchtime on Monday.

Mazrui said there were no reports of any technical problems during the flight, leading them to believe that the crash was caused by severe weather.

Fly Zanzibar, which has owned the plane since 2016, specialises in charter flights that transport visitors around Tanzania.
