Not less than fifteen people were killed and many others sustained varying degrees of injury on Monday evening when suspected herdsmen invaded four communities in Ebonyi State.
The affected communities are Nkalaha, Obeagu, Amazu and Umuhuali in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, further raising concerns about the country’s security.
A resident said: “We are mourning; we are in serious mourning since the late hours of Monday. Herdsmen invaded our communities and massacred our people. As we speak, 15 persons were slaughtered like animals. They hacked many of our people, burnt vehicles, motorcycles and looted our properties.”
The chairman of Ishielu Local Government Area, Honourable Sunday Eze, and the state Commissioner for Business Development, Dr Stephen Odo, who both hail from the local government area, on Tuesday,visited the area to commiserate with the deceased families.
Governor David Umahi had also visited the affected communities and condemned the attack by the suspected AK-47 wielding gunmen. He assured the people that proactive measures will be put in place.
While expressing sadness over the incident, The Governor assured the people that the government will do all within its powers to bring the perpetrators to justice. He also called on security operatives to help in fishing out those behind the heinous crime.
