Nearly 150,000 able-bodied Mozambicans have registered for military service in Mozambique so far this year.

There are 96,741 men and 52,481 females, with the registration process expected to continue until the end of February.

Before now, recruitment is compulsory in Mozambique for people between the ages of 18 and 35. However, while people previously served for two years in the army, now it has been increased to five years.

Those who make the final cut are those who pass health and fitness tests. Many young people are excited about enlisting because they see the army as a source of employment.

Refusal to register will also deny them access to study at state universities, as it is a precondition for admission. It is also a prerequisite for getting jobs in government establishments.

However, there are concerns that after training, some recruits may be sent to the front lines to battle against terrorist groups operating in the northern Cabo Delgado province.

The Mozambican Defense Ministry plans to recruit 221,141 people in total for military service in 2024, the authorities said a few weeks ago.
