The embattled 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, has announced the suspension of his planned Eid-el-Fitr Durbar in Kano, citing security concerns and advice from stakeholders.
Bayero made the announcement in a late-night video statement on Wednesday, marking a significant shift after previously notifying the Kano State Police Command of his intention to hold a separate Sallah Durbar.
His decision follows Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s approval for the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II, to proceed with preparations for the traditional festivities.
In the video, Bayero stated that consultations with elders, scholars, and members of his ‘Emirate’ Council influenced his decision. He emphasised that while the Durbar holds cultural significance, peace and stability must take precedence.

“The Eid Durbar is not a do-or-die affair. If it poses any risk of unrest or disorder, then it is necessary to suspend it,” he said.
He urged Kano residents to accept the decision in the interest of peace and encouraged Muslims to use the festive period to strengthen family and community ties. He also congratulated the Muslim faithful on the successful completion of Ramadan and prayed for divine blessings.
The cancellation comes amid the ongoing dispute over the Kano Emirate throne, with both Emir Bayero and Emir Sanusi II asserting their claims following months of political and legal battles.
