At least 16 pupils lost their lives, and 14 others sustained burns following a school fire incident at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Kieni, Nyeri County, Kenya.
This was confirmed by Police Spokesperson, Resila Onyango, on Friday.
The fire, which broke out in the school’s dormitory on Thursday night, is under investigation to determine its cause.
Onyango assured that appropriate action would be taken following the investigation.
“We are investigating the cause and will take necessary action,” she said.
There are concerns that the death toll may increase as the situation develops.
School fires in Kenyan boarding houses are not uncommon. Many students attend boarding schools because parents believe it offers them more study time. In some cases, fires have been linked to student unrest.
A previous incident in 2017 saw 10 high school students die in a school fire in Nairobi.
