At least 19 soldiers, including a commanding officer, were killed in an attack on the Malam-Fatori military base in Borno State’s Abadam Local Government Area on Friday, January 24, 2025.
Malam-Fatori, located near the Nigerien border, was stormed by insurgents arriving in multiple gun trucks. The attackers wreaked havoc for hours, destroying buildings, military vehicles, and dislodging the 149 Battalion.
Sources confirmed that survivors fled for safety, with many soldiers injured and several others reported missing. Among the dead were the commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Alari, two senior officers, and the base medical director.
The attack occurred while troops were conducting routine operations in the volatile Timbuktu Triangle, a region near Lake Chad where insurgents are known to operate.
