The Kano State Police Command has dismantled a phone theft syndicate led by 19-year-old Shamsiyya Adamu, arresting five suspects linked to the group.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident in a statement on Thursday. He revealed that Shamsiyya, a resident of Brigade Quarters, Kano, was apprehended on December 21, 2024, following numerous complaints of phone thefts in Unguwa Uku Quarters.
“In the past year, the Command received reports of a young woman stealing mobile phones from residential houses,” Haruna stated.
The syndicate reportedly used a tricyclist and a cybercriminal to facilitate their operations, targeting housewives and stealing their phones before accessing their bank accounts.
Arrests and Recoveries
The special intervention squad mobilised by CP Salman Dogo Garba arrested:
- Idris Yusuf (23): A tricycle operator who transported Shamsiyya during her operations.
- Al’asan Dahiru (24): Responsible for disposing of stolen goods.
- Abdulmajid Haruna (27): A buyer of stolen phones, with six recovered from him.
- Salim Auwalu (21): Involved in hacking victims’ bank accounts.
Police confirmed the recovery of six mobile phones, with efforts ongoing to recover more.
Victims Speak Out
Thirty complainants, including 29 women and one man, have reported incidents linked to Shamsiyya and her syndicate.
“Anyone wishing to report further complaints can contact the investigation team on 08032617800,” Haruna urged.
The investigation continues as authorities work to recover additional stolen items and bring those responsible to justice.
