20 Die As Migrant Boat Capsizes Off Tunisian Coast

Not less than 20 people died as a migrant boat sank off the Tunisian coast.

The both, carrying Africans trying to cross the Mediterranean to the Italian Island of Lampedusa, sank at the Tunisian coast, leading to the death of a score of people.

The city of Sfax where the boat capsized has seen high emigration rate of Africans running away from poverty especially.

Yearly, hundreds of Africans die in boat mishaps on the Mediterranean.

“The boat sank about six miles from the coast of Sfax. Twenty bodies were recovered, five others were rescued, and all are from sub-Saharan Africa,” a security official, Ali Ayari, said.

Officials have said at least 45 people were attempting to cross borders via the Mediterranean when the unfortunate incident happened. While some were lucky to be alive, others were not.

North African coastlines are some of the highest illegal emigration points in Africa due to their relative closeness to Europe, most especially Italy and Spain.

Tunisian youths, and Sub-Saharan Africans are often victims of both mishaps as they run from unemployment and harsh economic conditions at home.
