More than 20 individuals lost their lives in the Kali community of Gumi Local Government Area, Zamfara State, as they attempted to flee from an attack by bandits—their boat reportedly capsized in a river.
A resident said the bandits surrounded the village at 1:00 pm last Sunday.
“The bandits were seen moving towards Kalli village on motorcycles with sophisticated weapons to attack the community, which forced the villagers to flee for their safety,” he added.
He stated that the boat sank because it was carrying too much weight, causing the deaths of 20 villagers along the Birnin Magaji River.
He added that five bodies were discovered at Falale River, four at Birnin Magaji River, and three at Gadar Gummi River.
He mentioned that the bandits attacked five communities—Kwammaka, Kwammaka Jibi, Kwammaka Mai Katsina, Kallin, and Kazura villages—all located in the Gummi local government area.
The police have not released any official statement regarding the reported incident.
