More than 200 Al-Shabaab militants, including several key officials, were killed at their camp in Central Somalia in targeted US drone attacks, the Somali federal administration claimed on Sunday.
The attacks were said to have targeted Hareri Gubadle, a town in Wabho Township in the Galgaduud region, roughly 300 km north of Mogadishu, according to an official Somali government statement.
It was also gathered that the attack Al-Shabaab base is situated 20km east of Wabho Town.
The raid was a combined operation including the Somali National Army and the United States military.
“More than 200 Al-Shabaab militants and officials have been killed by the airstrikes,” the statement reads.
The government did not specify the exact date of the attack in its statement, but it did say that it is gathering information on the terrible incident.
This action takes place at a time when US military experts have suggested to President Joe Biden that some troops be sent to Somalia for better training and coordination with Somali security forces.
