The Rwanda Basketball Federation (Ferwaba) are certain that the 2019/2020 BK Basketball National League will end as planned despite the long time out of the game due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Ferwaba President Desire Mugwiza said the resumption of the league was unknown at the moment but remains confident it will end as scheduled as they wait on the government before any decision is made.

“We do not know for certain when the season will resume,” Mugwiza said.

He continued: “We are optimistic and confident that it will end according to our initial calendar, but we will wait for the government’s guidance before making any decision.”

The Basketball Federation President said the body has other options and made it clear that the league is top priority.

“There are alternative options in place. If we don’t restart the league in June, then some competitions on the season’s line-up will be cancelled so the league can be top priority.” He added.

Sports and other public gatherings remain banned in Rwanda, though the government partially lifted the lockdown – staring Monday May 4. This decision from the government will be revised again after 15 days before any other measures are made.

Mugwiza also said that the players will play lots of games in the time available so that the league will end as scheduled.

“Players and teams will have to play a lot of games in a short time once the league resumes, it is the only way we can recover the time lost. There will be national team’s competitions later this year, and they have to happen when the league season is over.” Mugwiza said.

The Men’s National Basketball League was suspended after match day 12 with title chasing Rwanda Energy Group leading the table with 23 points. They are currently one point ahead of reigning champions Patriots.

Rwanda’s local basketball 2019-2020 season was originally scheduled to end with the playoff’s games in September.
