The domestic league season in Burundi is set to resume on May 21, a month after political rallies were held at stadiums ahead of the countries general elections led to the suspension of the domestic football league.
This was revealed by the President of the competitions commission of the Burundi Football Federation Yussuf Moussi in a release signed informing stakeholders that football will resume in the country.
A part of President Yussuf Moussi’s release stated;
The above announcement indicates a resumption in the Burundi Primus league, the National league and the President’s cup for the 2019-2020 season will resume from May 21.
The commission decided to call off the championship in April and have set aside the last week of May as the possible resumption date and this will be respected going by the BFF’s current plan.
Other leagues across the continent have either canceled or suspended their league football due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the Burundi Football Federation (BFF) are ready to resume league and cup football competitions after the May 20 national elections.
Angola’s top division (Girabola), the Kenyan Premier League, the Mauritian Premier League, and the Guinee Championnat National have all called off their 2019/2020 domestic league seasons.
The Burundi Football Federation also announced the semi-final and final games of the country’s domestic cup competition (the Burundian Cup) will be played and the final will be held on June 13.
The East African Nation had its first case of coronavirus on March 31 and the health ministry have announced 15 cases and one death after then.
Before the Burundi Premier League season was suspended, spectators going to stadiums had their temperatures checked and hands sprayed with sanitizers or disinfectants on entrance to match venues.
Most of the 16 Burundi Premier League club sides have five games left to play this season with Le Messager on top of the table with 55 points from 27 games, four points ahead of Musongati, who have a game in hand.
