Petrol Tanker Explodes in Bauchi, Nigeria, Three in Hospital

At least three people have been left with various degrees of burns in Nigeria’s northeastern state of Bauchi after a tanker exploded in from of a polytechnic in the state.

News Central gathered that the incident happened on Tuesday night at Yelwa area of Bauchi city.

The tanker which was fully loaded with petrol wreaked havoc in the city and caused palpable tension among residents who scampered for safety.

It was gathered that the tanker had fallen and spilled its content after ramming into a speed breaker on the road. Resident in the area had surrounded the fallen tanker to scoop the fuel when it exploded.

An eyewitness who opined that the tanker driver might have forgotten about the speed breaker, said “there was a tricycle right in front of him” when he rammed into it.

He added that the driver tried to avoid hitting the tricycle driver and in the process, the tanker lost control, fell on its side and skidded right to the front of the Polytechnic gate.”

The tanker didn’t explode immediately. It took about 30 to 40 minutes. And because it didn’t explode immediately it fell, scavengers were trying to scoop fuel when it exploded.

Three people were burnt in the process and have been rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital for medical attention.”
