At least one person has been reported dead following the collapse of a five-storey building in Kiambu County, Central Kenya on Monday.
The building which was under construction reportedly caved in around 2 pm while workers were working on the 6th floor. As of 7.15 pm, several of the workers were still trapped in the rubble.
The exact number of people trapped in the debris is unknown.
Nine others were rescued from the debris and rushed to Kihara Level IV Hospital with injuries but in stable condition.
Kiambu County Police Commander Ali Nuno confirmed the incident, saying the building was meant to be a residence.
Nairobi and Kiambu are among the areas experiencing a construction boom with many buildings having more than 10 stories.
There have been concerns over structures being constructed without proper supervision.
Last week, nine people died after a crane accident in Nairobi’s Hurlingham area.
