For distributing Lollipops to MPs during an active session, a Kenyan MP was on Wednesday suspended from parliament for a day.

She had been accused by Kiharu MP, Ndindi Nyoro of distributing money as bribes in the law-making house.

Ndindi Nyoro said: “This is an honorable house and we make our decisions based on persuasion and conviction. It is abhorrent to see Madame Gedi distributing money […] to the members to vote […] We cannot have bribery happening in this house,” Nyoro said.

However, when asked by the speaker what she was distributing, Fatuma Gedi said she was handing out sweets. “The sugar levels of the honorable members have gone down,” Gedi said.

Both Ndindi Nyoro and Gedi were suspended from parliament for the rest of the day. Nyoro was suspended from parliament for two days after speaker Soipan Tuya said his bribery claim was misleading.

“Hon Nyoro, based on the standing orders 107 having misled the house. I order Hon Nyoro be removed from precincts of parliament for two days,” temporary speaker Soipan Tuya ruled.

Gedi was suspended for a day for breaking house rules on conduct by distributing food in the chamber.

The MPs passed several amendments to the law on political parties ahead of this year’s general elections.
