Video: Curfew In Sokoto As Protesters Of Students’ Arrest Go Irate

After some students of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, Northwest Nigeria were arrested by the Police in connection to the death of a student of the school, Deborah Samuel over blasphemy, some youths protested and demanded their release.

The protesters went irate and wild as they destroyed properties in the state forcing the Sokoto state government to announce a 24-hour curfew to bring some calmness to the state.

Samuel was beaten and killed by a mob on Thursday after she was accused of blasphemy in her class’ Whatsapp group.

She was accused of making blasphemous statements against Prophet Muhammed in a Whatsapp group.

The supposed blasphemy saw some of her colleagues beat, stone and burn her dead boy, sparking furious reactions on the social media and the call for the prosecution of the actors.

The Police arrested two students of the school afterwards but others have protested their arrest and went haywire in the process.

 “Everyone should, please, in the interest of peace go back home,” Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal pleaded with the youths.

Earlier on Saturday, hundreds of youths in the state were reported to have protested the arrest of the students with the situation snowballing into violence.

They were dispersed by the Police and soldiers according to reports from the state as they attempted to loot and destroy properties of innocent traders.
