The African Games, which were scheduled to take place in Ghana in August, have been postponed until next year following an agreement between the multi-sport competition’s major stakeholders.
Ghana’s efforts to host the 13th edition of the African Games have been hampered by an ongoing dispute over marketing rights, which has caused the completion of necessary facilities to be delayed.
President Akufo-Addo had announced plans to build an Olympic-quality stadium at Borteyman for the African games in October 2020. However, those plans were abandoned in June 2021, with organisers opting to renovate the University of Ghana Stadium, which is now behind schedule. The coronavirus pandemic, as well as rising costs due to high inflation, have been cited as reasons for the delay.
Dr Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, chairman of the organising committee, stated at a press conference held at another host venue, the Accra Sports Stadium, that the games will still be known as ‘Accra 2023’ as originally planned.
“The name will be the same. Tokyo 2020 was done in 2021 so we will maintain the name,” he stated.
“There has not been any definite day but very soon you will know if it’s 2024,” he said of the event’s date.
