Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed globally on May 28, stands as a vital initiative aiming to shed light on the significance of proper menstrual hygiene management and break the taboo surrounding menstruation.
As we honour the 2024 Menstrual Hygiene Day we provide valuable insights to assist girls and women during this significant time of the month.
UNICEF defines menstruation as the natural process of shedding blood and related matter from the uterus through the vagina during the menstrual cycle.
It’s imperative to be aware of common menstrual health issues such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS), menstrual cramps, irregular periods, and heavy bleeding to identify any abnormalities and seek necessary medical attention.
Here are ten essential tips to enhance menstrual health and hygiene:
1. Regularly change sanitary products to prevent bacterial growth and infections. Aim to change pads every 4-6 hours, tampons every 4-8 hours, and menstrual cups according to manufacturer guidelines.
2. Choose the appropriate sanitary product based on your flow and personal preference to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
3. Maintain personal hygiene by washing the genital area at least twice a day with plain warm water and avoiding scented products that may irritate the skin.
4. Dispose of used sanitary products properly by wrapping them in paper and disposing of them in designated bins to prevent infections and maintain cleanliness.
5. Opt for comfortable, breathable cotton underwear to reduce moisture build-up and the risk of yeast infections.
6. Practise good hand hygiene by washing hands with soap before and after changing sanitary products to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria.
7. Stay hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day to manage bloating and promote overall health.
8. Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains while limiting caffeine and salty foods to support menstrual health and reduce symptoms.
9. Incorporate regular exercise such as walking, yoga, or swimming into your routine to alleviate menstrual cramps and improve mood.
10. Track your menstrual cycle using a calendar or period-tracking app to predict your period, manage symptoms, and identify any irregularities
