Ahead of the 2027 election, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has stated that there is no merger agreement yet with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), or any other party.
The former governor of Anambra State made this declaration on Thursday morning during a press conference in Abuja regarding the state of the nation.
He emphasised that no agreement has been reached with other parties at this time. Obi called on all Nigerians who are passionate about the country’s future to unite in 2027 in order to defeat the All Progressives Congress (APC), which he accused of mismanaging the nation’s resources.
Obi also described the country’s security situation as tragic, noting that Nigerians are dying needlessly due to banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings for ransom.
He highlighted the continued high levels of corruption in Nigeria, as well as the escalating cost of governance, which has led to a dramatic increase in public debt under the current administration of President Bola Tinubu of the APC.
Obi claimed that government officials have willfully mismanaged public funds in 2024, citing excessive foreign travel as an example.
In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu emerged victorious in 12 of Nigeria’s 36 states and secured significant support in several others, winning the highest number of votes — 8,794,726, nearly two million more than his closest rival, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP.
Atiku, who has contested for president six times, received 6,984,520 votes, while Obi, a first-time contender, secured an unprecedented 6,101,533. Rabiu Kwankwaso of the NNPP, the former governor of Kano State, finished fourth with 1,496,687 votes, having claimed victory in his home state of Kano.
Interestingly, both Obi and Kwankwaso were members of the PDP just months before the election, but they left the party citing irreconcilable differences.
