Reports that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) extended an invitation to former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan to run for president in 2027 have been refuted.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, refuted the rumours, claiming that Jonathan was not given the party’s presidential ticket.
“It is untrue to say that the PDP has offered former President Goodluck Jonathan its presidential ticket or invited him to run in the 2027 election,” he stated.
What transpired was that I spoke with a journalist about a few topics during our interview.
“However, throughout the conversation, he brought up President Jonathan and enquired about our thoughts on him, as there have been rumours that he is being pressured to run for president.
“In response, I stated that Jonathan is qualified to run for office because he is a Nigerian and has the legal right to do so, and he still has one term left. Therefore, since he is eligible notwithstanding the law, there is nothing wrong with him running for president.”
Additionally, he stated that the PDP had done enough for Jonathan and that they would never court him as a party member.
Twelve governors and numerous other well-known politicians are qualified and entitled to run for president, according to Abdullahi, who clarified that they had not yet spoken with Jonathan about the matter.
Not long ago, his wife claimed that nothing would force her husband to run for president and that he didn’t leave anything in the villa that would lead people to believe he would return to run for office. So how can we think about him? A ticket is awarded to a person who has expressed interest.
