219 Inmates Escape From Ugandan Prison

Uganda security agencies are in pursuit of over 200 prisoners who escaped from a prisoner in the country.

The prisoners were said to have escaped from Singila Prison after killing a soldier who tried to intercept them.

The incident happened on Wednesday, reports claimed.

The inmates were said to have made off with some guns and ammunition after breaking out of the facility before heading for the hills.

Meanwhile, Prisons service spokesperson said they had deployed three helicopters and soldiers on foot to pursue the fugitives.

Two of escaping inmates have been shot dead.

The escapees are thought to be trying to use mountain routes to cross the border into Kenya.

The prison facility, usually with a population of over 600 inmates, has been put under lockdown as investigations into how the jailbreak happened get under way.

Seven inmates have been captured so far.

“It’s a mass escape… these were hard-core criminals,” army spokeswoman, Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso said, adding they included murderers, robbers and rapists.

The prisoners took off their clothes to avoid being spotted in their distinctive yellow uniforms and ran into the foothills of Mount Moroto, an underpopulated area that the spokeswoman described as “a wilderness”.
