Not less than 28 teenagers have drowned after their boat capsized in Sokoto State, North-West Nigeria. News Central gathered that the victims were trying to cross a river to fetch firewood on Tuesday evening in the Shagari region of Sokoto state.
Sources say that most of the victims were girls. The precise number of passengers on board the vessel is unknown, but 28 bodies have been discovered.
Rescuers are still searching the seas for more people who have gone missing. The cause of the capsize is unknown, however boat accidents are regular in Nigeria, and are frequently blamed on overloading, poor maintenance, and adverse weather.
The last of such tragedy in Northern Nigeria occurred in December 2021 with over 20 persons drowning after a boat carrying passengers capsized in Bagwai River in Bagwai Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State, Nigeria.
Recall that News Central reported on Monday that at least 13 African migrants died when their boat sank off Tunisia.
