Nigerians in Diaspora Commission officials in Jordan, which oversees Iraq, have stepped in to facilitate the return of a 28-year-old Nigerian woman, Eniola Isaac, who was trafficked.
This came after a report on Wednesday indicated that Isaac was allegedly enticed to Iraq with false assurances of a better life.
Unfortunately, she was subjected to various forms of abuse, physical violence, and mistreatment by her employer in Iraq, leading her to appeal to Nigerian authorities for assistance in her return.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) provided an update via their official X.com account on Thursday, stating that Isaac’s case reflects the growing concern over the trafficking of Nigerians to Iraq through misleading promises.
“Eniola Isaac, a 28-year-old Nigerian woman trafficked in Iraq, is scheduled to return to Nigeria on January 3rd due to the intervention of officials from the Nigerian mission in Jordan, which oversees Iraq.
“Additionally, another case involving a Nigerian who was working as a caregiver in Iraq and was killed under suspicious circumstances is currently being looked into.
“The Nigerian government has called for an autopsy to determine the cause of the victim’s death,” they stated.
NiDCOM also cautioned against “unscrupulous agents who are wickedly enticing young Nigerian women to Iraq with deceitful and harmful promises,” warning that these actions often lead unsuspecting victims into situations of slavery and prostitution upon their arrival in the country.
