No fewer than 33 people reportedly died after a fuel-laden truck collided with a commercial bus in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Police authorities said on Monday that the deceased were gutted by a “huge fire sparked by the collision” on Saturday in Kibuba village near Kinshasa, DR Congo’s capital.
The victims were reportedly buried on Monday.
Another police source said the bodies were destroyed by the flames, adding that the remains that were recovered were buried on Monday.
Fatal road accidents are common in DR Congo. In October 2018, 53 people died in a petroleum tanker accident on a major road between Kinshasa and the western seaport of Matadi.
In Sange, East DR Congo, no fewer than 230 people were killed in 2010 when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded, unleashing a fireball that tore through homes and cinemas packed with people watching Ghana play Uruguay in the FIFA World Cup held in South Africa.
“It’s a terrible scene. There are lots of dead bodies on the streets. The population is in terrible shock — no one is crying or speaking,” a government official said at the time.
