From the 15th to 18th of February 2024, African Leaders converged in Ethiopia’s capital of Addis Ababa to discuss the theme “Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa”.
The 37th African Union (AU) Summit is a milestone in the continent’s quest for progress, socioeconomic development and unity.
Over the years, the question of relevance has been raised concerning the AU and its achievements since its creation.
However, the recently concluded summit emphasised the importance of education for development and increasing the quality of life for member states of the union.
In light of this, the AU has developed the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA) which it describes as an initiative “vying to expand access not just to quality education, but also to education that is relevant to the needs of the continent given that the continent’s population is rapidly increasing”.
Some of the objectives of CESA include:
Rejuvenating the teaching profession to ensure quality at all levels, expanding access to quality education through infrastructural development, and leveraging technology to improve access, quality and management of education and training systems and more.
During the summit, the chair of the African Union Commission (AUC), Moussa Faki Mahamat also urged African leaders to take action against instability in the continent.
